Swede revenge as Greg bows out

Greg Rusedski ran out of steam in the RCA Championship in Indianapolis after failing to convert a one-set lead over 11th seed Joachim Johansson.

Rusedski, winner of the event in 2002, lost 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

In the previous round the British No2 had beaten another Swede, 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson.

Earlier this month, Rusedski's tournament success in Newport, Rhode Island, lifted him back into the world's top 100, meaning he is likely to gain automatic entry to the forthcoming US Open.

Top seed Andy Roddick was embroiled in a tight second round match against Swiss qualifier Michel Kratochvil before heavy rain forced a halt.

Roddick, the defending champion and Wimbledon runner-up, was leading 6-4, 2-5 when heavy rain suspended play. The match will be completed today, with the winner going on to face 15thseeded American Robby Ginepri, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 winner over Frenchman Sebastien de Chaunac.

There were several upsets in earlier matches, including unseeded Gregory Carraz's 7-6, 7-6 win over fifth-seeded American Mardy Fish.

Two other seeded players also withdrew from the event, both citing stomach problems.

Sjeng Schalken lost his first set to Jan Hernych 7-5 and trailed 1-0 in the second set before retiring and Taylor Dent quit before playing his match against Todd Reid after getting a bye into the second round.
