Sven's Turkey warning

Dutch referee Rene Temmink insisted that the match was one of the most unpleasant he had officiated in. He sent off Gerrard because of an expletive-filled rant, after he had been involved with various Galatasaray players.

Temmink said: "From the moment I sent the first player off, Gerrard started talking to me. I warned him twice and, after the third time, I had no choice.

"I can't repeat what he said. It is not something you would say to a ref or another person. If we had to tolerate this, then I would stop refereeing.

"It surprised me the players were so quickly irritated, and that includes the Turkish players. The atmosphere on the pitch was very bad.

"The first half was alright but all this started in the second half. It was horrible. It began when I awarded a free-kick to Galatasaray's Hakan Unsal and, at that stage, a few of the Turkish players came over to Steven Gerrard, who had made the tackle.

"At that moment I knew it was about the history of Turkey and England.

"It was not of interest to me, but there was a lot of swearing and shouting at each other and it became very bad."

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier admitted Gerrard had lost his cool but suggested there was "a lot of provocation going on."

He added: "I do not want to take the competitive element out of him, and I don't think that he will become a marked man because of what happened."
