Sven: Robbo's number one

Sven-Goran Eriksson today gave Paul Robinson the green light to establish himself as the automatic choice for England goalkeeper.

The Spurs No1 has impressed the Swede with his attitude and ability since he displaced David James for the World Cup qualifier in Poland last September.

Robinson held on to the jersey for the ensuing victories over Wales and Azerbaijan and, providing he stays fit, looks certain to start against Northern Ireland in March.

Eriksson told TheFA.com: "Robinson has done very well since he's come in. He has not been that busy because the defence are playing so well but what he has done, he's done absolutely perfectly.

"He will be very happy to have the clean sheet not just from the Wales game but also from Azerbaijan, where it was a different experience."

The former Leeds goalkeeper has been in outstanding form at club level, playing a key role in Spurs' new-look defence. Since arriving at White Hart Lane for £1.5million last summer, he has conceded just four goals in nine Premiership starts and his commanding displays have been noted by the England coach.
