Sven picks Leeds pair

Leeds pair Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate were today called up by England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson for Saturday's friendly with Portugal at Villa Park.

But there was no place for goalkeeper David Seaman, his Arsenal team- mate Martin Keown or Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham as Eriksson began his post-World Cup era by by discarding England's old guard .

Bowyer and Woodgate's inclusion comes after the Football association lifted their international bans. The pair were not allowed to play for England during their high-profile court case which resulted last year in Bowyer being cleared of all charges and Woodgate being convicted of affray.

West Ham's Joe Cole is included along with team-mates, goalkeeper David James, and midfield star Trevor Sinclair.

There was no place however for 19-yearold West Ham striker Jermain Defoe, who had to settle for a place in the Under-21 squad instead after an injury to Aston Villa's Darius Vassell had appeared to open the door for him.

Eriksson was at Upton Park on Saturday to see Defoe have a quiet game against his former club Charlton, but with Leeds striker Robbie Fowler also ruled out through injury, the England coach's options are limited.
