Sullivan key to Petit deal

Tottenham are considering a deal with Chelsea that would bring Emmanuel Petit to White Hart Lane and allow Neil Sullivan to move in the opposite direction.

Chelsea are on the brink of offering Spurs around £500,000 for their out-of-favour Scottish goalkeeper as they seek to bolster their options after an injury to Jurgen Macho.

Glenn Hoddle, who was linked with a move for Petit earlier this summer, is set to rekindle his interest in the French midfielder, although he is yet to return to full fitness. Spurs tried to sign Petit when he came to England from Monaco, but Arsenal beat them to it.

Claudio Ranieri is looking for an experienced No2 to Carlo Cudicini, and Sullivan is top of his wanted list. His contract expires at the end of the season and he was originally told by Spurs he could leave on a free transfer if a club came in for him. The Scotland international was kept out of the Spurs side by Kasey Keller for the whole of last season.

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp has warned Spurs to expect a Liverpool backlash tomorrow night.

Redknapp spent 11 years at Anfield and knows his former club will be smarting after picking up only one point from their opening two games. Spurs travel to Liverpool buoyed by their victory over Leeds on Saturday, and their captain said: "Liverpool have still got some fantastic players from the time I left but they have never won the league, which is what manager Gerrard Houllier wants.

"They are getting closer to achieving that but it was a difficult start for them against Chelsea. Because of that defeat, it is going to be even more difficult for us. They will want to get a result and hate losing too many games at Anfield."
