"Andrew is obviously an immense talent and his 142 at Lord's was fantastic," said Vaughan following England's innings and 92-run defeat. "But we have to look at the top six as a unit and try to get bigger scores to put South Africa under pressure."
If Flintoff is to stay at No7, behind six other batsmen, Read would need to be put at No8 - leaving room for only three more bowlers.
Given that South Africa have totalled 594 for five and 682 for six in their first innings at Edgbaston and Lord's respectively, England - one Test down with three to play - will hardly want to weaken their attack.
"You don't just go away and ignore things," added Fletcher. "But it's very important we think about things, have a look at it and take a balanced view."
