St Peter's hit the ground running

St Peter's, York have been through the pearly gates once to capture some silverware and their early season flourish suggests they could make it again to Twickenham.

Ten of the squad who won the Under 15 Cup two seasons ago are at the heart of the Under 18 team, which swept aside Yorkshire rivals South Hunsley 54-0 in their second round tie after rattling up 35 points in the first 10 minutes. South Hunsley were very much underdogs but St Peter's then devoured Ampleforth by the same score on Saturday in a regular fixture.

They are brimming with confidence after a 15-game unbeaten run, which involved seven matches on tour in Australia and three games in the King's, Macclesfield pre-season tournament. Significantly, they have since put Woodhouse Grove and Hymers to the sword. If St Peter's beat Leeds Grammar at home in the third round, they then face the winners of Woody and their Hull opponents.

St Peter's are led by inspirational No 8 Ali McLeod, who captained the Under 15 side to a forward-orientated victory in 2003 over Outwood Grange, but this team are playing a more expansive game under new coach Richard Francis, the former Quins winger. He is blessed with an exciting centre partnership in former Ashville College player James Marsden and cup winner Peter Wackett.

They each scored a hat-trick of tries against South Hunsley and Ampleforth and looked the business again in yesterday's (Sunday) Yorkshire trials. Watch out Leeds Grammar.
