Spurs must build strong case for defence

It is easy to find something positive to say about Tottenham's latest Premiership display - at least it wasn't seven.

The fact the scoreline wasn't higher than four was purely down to goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

He saved Spurs from an even more embarrassing result with some fine second-half saves and the American even found time to have a row with defender Dean Richards after Alan Shearer's second goal.

The pair had to be separated by skipper Stephen Carr after a furious row about their inability to stop a Laurent Robert corner from bouncing in the six-yard box before Shearer supplied the finish. Acting manager David Pleat said: "It was all to do with a couple of balls that came deep into the box which were not dealt with adequately."

Two stunning goals from Robert had already put Spurs on the rack before Shearer struck twice from corners - the first being his 100th goal for United at St James' Park.

Robert's goals were simply stunning - his first a 30-yard volley after Spurs wasted four chances to clear the ball, his second a brilliant 25-yard drive into the top corner. Robert's opener arrived after some comical Spurs defending. Mauricio Taricco, Gustavo Poyet, Anthony Gardner and Ledley King all failed to clear before Robert netted.

Now Spurs must pick themselves up for their Carling Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night and may have to do so without Freddie Kanoute, who was forced off on the hour mark with a leg injury.

Pleat said: "Unfortunately, I'm not a psychologist. We all pretend we are but I can't crack open their heads and see what's inside. I will know on Wednesday if there is response - our supporters deserve one."
