Waterbuses make travel plain sailing

The East End's first "waterbus" is being hailed as a solution for sports fans going to the Olympic Park keen to avoid traffic jams and public transport delays.

Nearly four miles of waterways linking the old East End with the Olympics Park in Stratford are to be opened to the public with the first boats to be tested this month.

The canals will be turned into an "East End Amsterdam" as part of a £10million regeneration project to be completed in time for the Games.

The Water Chariots offer "near-certain" journey times for spectators. Each boat carries 90 passengers and will stop 75 yards from the western entrance of the Olympic Park. Departing from Limehouse near Tower Bridge, the 30-minute service will run every 20 minutes. Tickets start from £20. The waterbus will also operate a service north of the Park to Tottenham Hale.

Water Chariots director Peter Coleman said: "Rather than arriving hot and sweaty and stressed this is a very civilised way of travelling to the Games... no hassle, no trains, no traffic."
