Houghton was one of six Arsenal representatives who played their part in securing the three points and then watched Britain’s next opponents Cameroon suffer a demoralising 5-0 defeat by Brazil.
Victory over the African side at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday evening will guarantee Powell’s squad a place in the quarter-final, for which the two best third-placed sides qualify as well as the top two in each of the three groups.
“They’ve played Northern Ireland and Scotland and we’ve had them scouted,” said Powell. “They’re physical and very fast and I think it will be a tough proposition. We haven’t got a lot of time in between games and the heat is not what we’re used to.
“It’s got considerably hotter over the last few days and it just took us a little bit of time to find our feet. The most important thing is that we scored a goal and won the game.”
Brazil clearly enjoyed the conditions and must be favourites to win the group on the form they showed in front of the few thousand supporters who stayed on for the second match. There may be an element of cat-and-mouse, however, if they and Great Britain have both won two matches and qualified before their meeting at Wembley on Tuesday.
