“I’m ready for the World Championships,” he said. “I’m in great shape and will be back to full fitness by the time Moscow comes around. I can be back as the best triple jumper in the world.”
In Idowu’s absence, American Christian Taylor, the pre-event favourite, won Olympic gold with a best leap of 17.81m, which matched the personal best Idowu set in winning his European title in Barcelona in 2010.
Only two men have ever jumped over 18m in the triple jump, Jonathan Edwards, whose world record of 18.29m dates back to 1995, and American Kenny Harrison, who leapt to the 18.09m mark the following year.
But Idowu believes a host of jumpers could go past the 18m distance in 2013 – and is backing himself to be one of them.
