Spencer all set to put his woes behind him

Jockey Jamie Spencer has a chance to alleviate his classic disappointments after Godolphin today gave him the Group One call-up.

He has been booked by the world-renowned Dubaian operation to deputise for a suspended Frankie Dettori on Noverre in Saturday's Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

The young rider was frustrated when both his Guineas mounts, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Hawk Wing in the 2,000 and Luca Cumani's Gossamer in the fillies' equivalent, finished beaten favourites earlier this month.

Hawk Wing's neck defeat by stablemate Rock Of Gibraltar, part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, was particularly galling as it appeared the colt was beaten through having the worst of the draw. With Richard Hills also employed to partner Godolphin stable companion, Summoner, in the same mile contest, Spencer is now poised to set straight some Group One records of Godolphin's own.

After three years of Lockinge domination with successive victories from Cape Cross, Fly To The Stars and Aljabr, Sheikh Mohammed's team aims to retrieve the trophy lost to the Sir Michael Stoutetrained Medicean 12 months ago.

But Godolphin may also seek to re-write the script from Ascot last September when its same two charges infamously finished in the 'wrong' order. Dettori, on first string and 2-1 favourite Noverre, allowed Hills to poach the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes with a clever front-running ride on 33-1 shot, Summoner.
