Spectait can be the perfect draw

Spectait looks to have the ideal position to land the £150,000 Totesport Mile at Goodwood tomorrow.

When it comes to draw advantages, there are the obvious and the not so obvious.

Selective watering controversially plays its part at some tracks, alongside local geography, but even the least mathematically minded could spot why being drawn high is so important in tomorrow's handicap.

After only a couple of furlongs, the field must negotiate a right turn of more than 90 degrees, meaning that the runners almost double back on themselves.

In last year's renewal, the first five horses home occupied the five highest-numbered stalls - and that result was no one-off.

And from stall 16, Spectait, who won this contest in 2006 when trained by Sir Mark Prescott, looks very interesting.

Now in the care of Jonjo O'Neill and racing in the famous green and gold colours of owner JP McManus, the seven-year-old gelding completed a hat-trick of wins on the all-weather this year before going to Doncaster for the Spring Mile, where he reared up just as the stalls opened and ended up heading backwards as his rivals went forward.

Spectait subsequently showed that he is just as effective on turf when a decent fourth behind Richard Fahey's Extraterrestrial - who he opposes on better terms here - in Newbury's Spring Cup and he can be forgiven his latest outing at Leicester over an inadequate seven furlongs after a 10-week break.
