"Well, last night, it was incredible that he should tell me as we were waiting for the ceremony to start that he thought what I had done was much better than his performance in Moscow. He wished me luck on my double bid and told me the way I had run my race was the way he wishes he had run his 800m race all those years ago. Coming from such a great athlete, that's a real compliment but, for me, this really did feel like my perfect race. I took a big risk hanging back at the start and letting them go off at a fast pace but I thought I'd save as much energy for the last 200m as I could. Going round that top bend, everyone was barging, trying to find space but I was wide out in lane two because I wanted to be in an attacking position.
