Softly does it for Orcadian after big win

Orcadian, the long-shot who stunned Newbury punters by winning the weekend Group 3 St Simon Stakes at 33-1, has been reprieved from a trip to the Sales on Wednesday.

Following the 15-length victory his Newmarket trainer James Eustace is busily trying to find a race abroad for him, hopefully on similar going to the soft-to-heavy conditions which sapped the opposition's stamina at the rain-lashed Berkshire course.

Although the bay gelding put the tin hat on many gamblers' aspirations that afternoon, Orcadian's owner Jeff Smith, of Persian Punch fame, and the three-year-old's handler, Eustace, were able to show a profit.

Eustace said: "I had £5 each-way on the Tote on him because he is a half-brother to Jeff 's Rapscallion, who won the Horris Hill Stakes and was trained by me to score on bottomless going."

Smith revealed he had invested £100 at 37-1 on the exchanges on Orcadian, who the previous week had been 100-1 when fifth in the Darley Stakes at Newmarket.

Now the hunt is on for a mile and a half contest where softish ground can be assured. Eustace has been in touch with the International Racing Bureau to see if they can assist him in finding a suitable slot.
