However, Davenport, third seed at Flushing Meadow, offered support to Kournikova after making her way into the third round by defeating Emilie Loit 6-0, 6-2. She said: "It's been a disappointing year for Anna, being out for eight months because she brings so many fans into the game.

"Everyone is hoping she comes back and plays but I have heard her injury is extremely serious.

"Everyone is now crossing their fingers that she can come back healthy when the time is right. As far as what happens if she never wins a tournament, then I don't really know. I think the media give her a tough time but she is a good player."

Serena Williams, the 1999 US Open champion, added her voice to the players backing Kournikova. Williams, who beat second round opponent Denisa Chladkova 6-1, 6-1, said: "I think the publicity that she generates is great because it gets more people watching women's tennis."

Other second round winners included top seed Martina Hingis and Wimbledon finalist Justine Henin.
