Schools Rugby: Whitecross clinch semi spot

Leigh Green crowned an heroic performance from Whitecross when the prop crashed over for the only score of their Daily Mail Under 15 Vase quarter-final at St George's, Addlestone.

'They were bigger than us and had the majority of possession,' said coach Ian Wilkins, 'but we tackled everything that moved and took our chance when it came. Leigh scored after a series drives midway through the second half. We held out and, at the end, you would have thought from the reactiion that we had won the World Cup.'

Whitecross, from the traditional rugby stronghold of Lydney, join the strong contingent of west country teams bidding for glory in the Daily Mail schools competitions. Colston's, the six-times Under 18 champions from Bristol, are in the semi-finals again and both Sherborne and St Peter's, Gloucester have made the Under 15 Cup semi-finals at Castlecroft on March 13.

A measure of Whitecross's quality is that they lost only 19-7 to St Peter's in the first round of the main competition, which is their only defeat in 12 games this season.

'We have no real stars,' said Wilkins,' but the boys work so hard as a team
and the captain Tim Longton, really leads by example.'

The only setback for Whitecross is the loss of Tom Rhodes for their semi-final at Castlecroft on March 14 against Lawrence Sheriff School from Rugby. The centre broke his ankle playing last weekend, less than 48 hours after the win at St George's.
