Paul Scholes, who will start in midfield for Manchester United's biggest game of the season against Deportivo La Coruna tonight, says he has become a better player because of his poor form earlier in the season.

By his own admission, Scholes struggled playing in the 'hole' behind Ruud van Nistelrooy and he concedes that his confidence suffered.

Now back in his usual midfield role, he looks as good as ever and he impressed in United's win at Leeds on Saturday.

"I didn't have a good start and it took me a while to get a goal," said the England international. "Why it didn't work for me personally earlier in the season, I'm not too sure.

"I wasn't playing well really. Maybe it was a lack of confidence. I just wasn't playing my best and I don't know what to put it down to. I think I've turned that round now and hopefully that will help me now we're coming to the end of the season.

"I know I've got to be playing well in every game - and Deportivo is a massive game. Wherever I'm playing, I need to perform at this level."

United need an in-form Scholes as they prepare for tonight's Champions League quarter-final, first leg in the Riazor Stadium. The Spaniards showed their abundant class when they beat United home and away in the first phase in the autumn.
