Sanders is the punter's friend

Jockey Seb Sanders is the rider to follow if you want value for money.

Any punter who had backed all the mounts of the former champion apprentice this season would, to a level £1 stake, be showing a profit of £31.70, a figure only just bettered by Richard Hills among the leading jockeys.

Sanders, on the 58-winner mark for the present campaign, has achieved 18 of those successes from 82 rides in the last fortnight.

He is lying third behind Kieren Fallon and Richard Hughes in the Flat Jockeys' Championship, and looks sure to reach his century.

At present he is riding as second jockey for Sir Mark Prescott's stable behind veteran rider George Duffield but strongly tipped to take the top job when Duffield does finally hang his boots up.

Sanders was taking a day off today to recharge his batteries after driving the length and breadth of the country hunting more winners but is in action tomorrow at Brighton where he has four booked mounts.

He started his career as a claimer at Bryan McMahon's yard at Tamworth, in Staffordshire, where he grew up, and made his mark there before moving on to Reg Akehurst at Epsom.

He is now based at Bury St. Edmunds and the high point of his season so far has been landing Newcastle's Northumberland Plate on Bangalore for Amanda Perrett.

Sanders was in double form at Bath yesterday, and his agent, Keith Bradley, who has been with him throughout his career, said: "He's having one of those runs you dream about and, fingers crossed, it will continue. Now we are looking forward to the Glorious Goodwood meeting. We have got plenty of offers for rides there, but cannot commit to them until we know what Sir Mark's plans are."

Sanders knows what Goodwood glory is like, having won the Group Three King George Stakes on Rudi's Pet at the popular meeting in 1999. Rudi's Pet is trained by David Nicholls, another setting the game alight at the moment.

Sir Mark is also somewhat of a specialist in the Group One Nassau Stakes at the West Sussex downland track, having won the fillies and mares highlight twice with Last Second and Alborada.

FOOTBALL CRAZY, who clocked up a four-timer over the period of the World Cup, is set to come under the hammer at the Doncaster August Sales.
