The unexpected bonus came as welcome relief for Kay at the end of a week when he was deemed surplus to England's requirements and sent home from Ireland early.
He said: 'The coaches put their heads together and thought this would be a nice way of geeing me up. I didn't really need it but it's a nice consolation and it really cheered me up.'
For the Tigers, badly weakened by injuries and England call-ups, this was a well-executed victory by numbers, capped moments from the end when wing Steve Booth crossed for the fourth try - his second - to earn a bonus point.
Jannie de Beer went over to keep Saracens in touch between tries by Rod Kafer and Booth. But in the second half, another Tigers trademark settled the contest - a line-out and driving maul sending prop Derek Jelley over the line.
Saracens coach Francois Pienaar, while pointing out his team's own lengthy list of absentees, said candidly: 'Fourteen of their points came from our mistakes in the first half. The commitment and courage was very good but we didn't take our chances and our confidence drained.'
