The course plays over 7000 yards along the rugged, uninterrupted Lake Michigan shoreline.
How are the captains picked?
Both captains are typically named within a few months of the Ryder Cup finishing, with Thomas Bjorn having been confirmed in the role in December 2016.
When selecting a captain for the American side, the PGA’s Executive Committee will discuss their options, usually someone with Ryder Cup experience as a player or vice captain and at least one major title in their trophy cabinet.
Once they have come to a decision, the captain will be recommended to the PGA board of directors for their vote.
In Europe a similar process is followed, with the European Tour’s Tournament Committie selecting a player, though their choice must be signed off by the European Ryder Cup Players and Stakeholders Board.
