Rutter sees hope despite lost Goggles

"I am one of those jockeys who has never hit the big time. I'm not stylish. I would describe myself as a no-nonsense rider who gets the job done and goes home.

"I don't go out of my way to be fashionable. If owners want flashy pilots who jump off horses and wave their whips in the air, that's not me. I like to keep both hands on the reins if possible. That is the way Henry has brought me up. If I did a flying dismount he'd kick me up the backside."

Now Goggles has gone, Rutter picks out two horses of whom he has high expectations. One is Kyllachy, who dazzled when winning a 14-runner rated stakes at Sandown over five furlongs, beating Elsie Plunkett by five lengths.

The colt is entered for the Dubai Airport World Trophy at Newbury on 22 September.

The other is the unraced Zarzu, of whom Chris said: "I sat on him again this morning and I think he has a lot of potential. He feels better every time I get on him and he could start his career over six furlongs."

Rutter produced a notable first for himself at Lingfield last Thursday. He had his first winner for the powerful Roger Charlton yard when riding a peach of a race on Inchdura. He showed perfect timing on the chestnut, making his move when leader Chevening Lodge tired approaching the distance, to score by half a length. More mounts for the stable should hopefully follow.

The best advice Rutter ever received was when he began to get disillusioned at Candy's where there were lots of promising apprentices. He recalls: "I asked Henry if it would be better for me to find a smaller stable with fewer boys around. He told me to stick it out for a couple more weeks and he would see what he could do for me. From that day on it just seemed to snowball for me."

Rutter and wife Liz have two sons, Jamie, nine, and Marcus, six. Liz is secretary to top racing name Henry Ponsonby and former Olympic gold medallist and racehorse owner Chris Brasher.

Rutter said : "Jamie is a multi-talented boy. He has only just started riding lessons but is already appearing to be a 'natural'. He's a good footballer and can play and read music. It all seems to come so easy to him. Not like me. I got where I am by plugging away, but I wouldn't change a minute of it."
