Rusty Vaughan fit for No4 role

Wherever he bats, Vaughan will be rusty. He survived a good lbw shout before scoring yesterday and was understandably far from his fluent best. He had just begun to settle when he suffered the sort of shambolic run- out fate that denied Strauss a second debut century last Monday.

Vaughan had nudged and prodded his way to 32 off 62 balls when he cut behind square and was called for a quick run by Phil Jaques. He tried to send his team-mate back but eventually had to set off for a suicidal single and was run out by Steven Knox, yards from the crease.

He needed more practice time, but he's not the only one. New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan will have a net today before deciding whether he can play at Headingley after breaking the little finger of his left hand in the tour match at Leicester.

The Kiwis' manager, Lindsay Crocker, said: 'Craig's finger has been rebroken and it is very sore. But hopefully it will settle down and he will be OK to play at Headingley. He will have a bit of a bat tomorrow and then make a decision.

'As we're so close to the second Test we won't be sending for a replacement, as we have enough batting cover for Craig and enough bowling cover for Shane Bond. But Matthew Sinclair, who is playing league cricket in East Anglia, will join us for a couple of days just in case anything else happens.'

Spinner Daniel Vettori marked an ominous return to form in time for Headingley by taking five for 91 as New Zealand completed a 328-run victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road.

It was Vettori ' s first five-wicket haul for two-anda- half years and captain Stephen Fleming said: 'It was good for him to get some reward for his bowling. Nine wickets in this match will have done a lot for his confidence ahead of the Test.'

Vaughan even bowled two overs but his efforts were overshadowed by another, more regular off- spinner, Richard Dawson. The 23-year-old, who played in seven Tests before falling back down the England pecking order, took four for 20 as Yorkshire won by 59 runs.

Elsewhere, Paul Collingwood's last chance to make an impression ahead of the Test ended in disappointment as he fell for just 11 during Durham's sevenwicket win at home to Derbyshire, who were dismissed for 82.

Kevin Pietersen, who will qualify for England at the end of the summer, hit an unbeaten 80 as Notts breezed past Sussex at Trent Bridge.

In Division One, Nick Knight was in vintage form with 111 not out as Warwickshire fell 12 runs short of Glamorgan's total at Edgbaston.

Alex Wharf took a hat-trick with his last three deliveries to seal victory and put the Welsh side top of the table, though they have played two games more than secondplaced Lancashire.
