Martin Johnson has no regrets about leaving out Steve Borthwick

England manager Martin Johnson today insisted he had no regrets about leaving fit-again captain Steve Borthwick out of his squad for this summer's tour to Australia and New Zealand.

Saracens skipper Borthwick was not considered by Johnson for the tour as the lock was expected to be ruled out for two months during the summer following a knee injury that has sidelined him since March.

However, Borthwick has been declared fully fit by Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter and will start against Leicester in Saturday's Guinness Premiership Final at Twickenham.

Johnson, though, will not rearrange his plans in order to accommodate Borthwick, insisting a summer off would be the best thing for his regular captain.

"I'm not surprised he's back playing," Johnson said. "He was trying to make it back for the Premiership semi-finals and just missed out but when your team makes the final, you are going to do everything you can to play. He is disappointed he is not going on tour because he wants to play for England. But I spoke to Brendan about the decision and he agreed with me, in terms of what Steve needs to do in the summer."

Johnson confirmed Lewis Moody, who replaced the injured Borthwick as interim captain at the end of the Six Nations, will continue in that role on tour but the Leicester flanker is unavailable for Sunday's non-cap match against the Barbarians.
