Gray’s Olympic dream

Rugby Sevens makes its Olympic debut in 2016 and Alex Gray admits the lure of Rio inflenced his decision to ditch the 15-a-side game.

The London Irish No8 captained England Under-20s to the Junior World Cup final in 2011 but will put his union career on hold to hone his skills with England Sevens.

“I’d be lying if I said the Olympics weren’t on my radar but at the same time it’s a long way away,” said Gray. “The opportunity to be involved in the Olympics is bigger than rugby — it’s bigger than any single sport — and being involved is something I would keep with me for the rest of my life.”

The 21-year-old’s sevens career will begin this summer and Gray would love to see a GB dream team in Rio.

“There’s a massive talent pool with people like Christian Wade and George North,” said Gray. “If they wanted to come and strengthen Britain’s chances of a medal then I think that would be a good thing.”
