Rugby World Cup organisers pump up the volume with 'music stings'

World Cup organisers are planning to use music “stings” to ensure crowds get involved in the tournament, including England’s opening match against Fiji at Twickenham a week today.

Each stadium will be assigned its own producer, who will be tasked with creating the kind of atmosphere that will portray the tournament in the best light to the watching millions around the world.

Die-hard rugby fans will have to get used to thumping music after every try in a move designed to help increase the appeal of the sport, particularly among young fans and those new to the game.

Thirteen venues have been chosen to stage matches, including famous football stadia such as Wembley, Villa Park in Birmingham, St James’s Park in Newcastle and Elland Road in Leeds. More than 2.2million tickets have been sold, with high-profile matches also taking part at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, already famed for the noise produced by Welsh fans.

An England Rugby spokesperson said: “We will play music stings after a try is scored, however it will be at the discretion of the venue producer, based on the atmosphere in stadia.”
