Rowe ready to complete the double

Fontwell, the only figure-of-eight chasing track still left in the country after Windsor's demise as a jumping venue, is the sole National Hunt survivor tomorrow, when the highlight on television is the second running of the Victor Chandler Sussex National.

The £20,000 added three-and-a-half mile event was won by Richard Rowe's Mullintor (2.30, nap) last year, and he can complete the double on his home course.

The gelding, owned by colourful Bognor character Tommy 'Tarmac' Thompson, who runs a big road surfacing company, is a standing dish at the West Sussex circuit where he has won five times, three of them last season. He is set to carry 13lb more than when scoring from Nethertara in 1999, but has been warmed up for a repeat with a run over hurdles here earlier in the month.

One Mullintor will have to look out for is Lordberniebouffant, trained by Rowe's former boss, Josh Gifford, who also hails from just down the road. The seven-year-old was no slouch as a hurdler and has made the transformation to chasing well. He won a novice chase back in September at Huntingdon after a near five-month lay-off and was subsequently third over a trip too short for him at Fakenham. He goes well when fresh and could prove a big danger.

Real Value, from another Sussex stable, was runner-up in the Christies Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival back in March and must be respected on that form.

The other big race on the card, the Hasseroder Handicap Hurdle, can go to Martin Pipe's McHattie (3.35), who joined the West Country wizard from Alan King's establishment earlier this season and obliged for his new stable at Exeter earlier this month.
