Rose: No fears over my coach

"I've got no issues with that whatsoever," he said.

"In the athletics world you are looking for every edge you can get, with results depending on split seconds.

"If Frank thinks that one guy has got a little bit of expertise, who knows how important that could be come the end of a heptathlon?

"Denise came back with a really encouraging performance, so you have got to say it was the right decision."

Rose has done his homework and knows that Dick has helped turn decathlete Daley Thompson, the Olympic gold medallist and world record holder, Wimbledon champion Boris Becker and Formula One racing driver Gerhard Berger into top-class performers.

The 22-year-old Englishman said: "Frank has got a lot of experience dealing with guys at the top of their professions.

"He believes that is where I want to go and that is why he wants to work with me, because my goal is to be the best player I can be and ultimately the best player in the world."

As he has done with Lewis, Dick is co-ordinating a team to support Rose, mentally and physically.

David Leadbetter, the swing guru who turned Nick Faldo into Britain's greatest golfer, is part of that structure.

So is Munich-based Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, who was credited by Jose Maria Olazabal with saving his golfing career and enabling him to win a second Masters title. Muller-Wohlfahrt has already treated Rose for a back complaint and advised on treatment to prevent a recurrence over what should be a long and successful career. Leadbetter acknowledged: "Justin must be aware of possible burn out.

"He has had some back problems. Last season, he came home early from Qatar in immense pain and I told him 'you can't have this at 21. You really must concentrate on diet and fitness'. We have to care for Justin as we would a thoroughbred racehorse.

"But the danger in golf these days is there is so much emphasis on developing body power, winning money and travelling worldwide.

"Everybody is thinking you've got to be like Tiger Woods but the exhausting weights and running regime that Tiger undergoes each day does not suit everyone.

"Each individual must work out their own system to stay fit, strong and flexible or they'll be washed up.

"But Justin will win a major, no question about it. He's a nice kid, but he's got a fire burning in him and he really wants to be the best."

That ambition is what appeals to Dick. The two men are working together at Stapleford-Park, the luxury hotel and sports resort owned by former international athlete Andrew Parker, near Melton Mowbray.

Rose, already a golfing ambassador with Lloyds TSB, has accepted the position of captain of the Stapleford's Harborough Club and has made an impression there.

Dick revealed: "Justin is a fantastic young man, a great role model for young kids.

"We had a coaching session for young kids and their eyes were popping out of their heads that Justin Rose was working with them. The only reason it got stopped that night was because it got dark.

"We had to drag Justin off the golf course. He really is a special boy."

And a special golfer. Dick said: "Our aim is not for Justin to be trying to catch Tiger Woods, but for Tiger Woods to be trying to catch Justin."
