Rooney signs for Man Utd

Wayne Rooney was today completing a record-breaking transfer to Manchester United.

The deal, likely to be in the region of £25million, is the most paid in Britain for a teenager.

The 18-year-old arrived at United's training complex this morning to undergo a series of medical tests.

In a statement to the Stock Exchange, Manchester United said: "Manchester United Plc has reached an outline agreement with Everton FC for the transfer of the registration of Wayne Rooney, subject to his successful completion of a medical."

The deadline for transfers is midnight tonight and Everton said they were still "looking for the best possible deal for the club and its supporters".

England star Rooney had been at the centre of a week-long bidding war between Manchester United and Newcastle United.

He burst on to the international scene during the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal during which he scored four goals.

Rooney's image became tarnished when it was revealed he had visited a Liverpool brothel. The player and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Coleen McLoughlin, appeared to have patched things up with the publication today of photographs of them together. The couple denied reports that she was pregnant.
