Rooney and Beckham rock Sven planning

Sven-Goran Eriksson's England plans were in disarray last night after Wayne Rooney was struck down by flu and captain David Beckham was told to rest for 72 hours with a back injury.

The England coach announced his squad for Sunday's friendly with Denmark at Old Trafford and called up Chelsea defender Glen Johnson and Charlton midfielder Scott Parker.

But Rooney's late withdrawal from Everton's match at Blackburn last night looks like leaving England with only two

strikers - Darius Vassell and Emile Heskey.

Michael Owen is already out with an ankle injury and Eriksson decided against picking Southampton striker James Beattie. Beckham is a doubt for the Denmark game after Real Madrid doctors told him to rest a back injury sustained in the 4-1 away defeat against Seville on Sunday.

Johnson, 19, who is now a good bet for a place in the final 23-man squad for Euro 2004 even though a recent red card for the Under 21s will rule him out of the first game of the tournament, was joined in the squad by Parker and Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas.

There was also a surprise recall for Gareth Southgate, who criticised Eriksson in his autobiography, while Sol Campbell was a late withdrawal with a leg injury.

'I think Parker and Johnson deserve their chance,' said Eriksson. 'They have both been playing well. Johnson plays with real style.'
