Roman: I am here for the long run

Roman Abramovich will tomorrow reaffirm his long-term commitment to Chelsea and underline his support for Jose Mourinho by backing him with more money to strengthen his Premiership-winning team.

In a statement to be carried in the match programme for the Stamford Bridge clash with Charlton, the Russian billionaire will tell supporters he has no plans to quit the club.

And as head coach Mourinho today revealed he has targeted at least three new signings to be brought in during the close season, Abramovich will reveal how he plans to carry on spending.

Abramovich has already invested more than £220million on new players since buying the club for £140m two years ago. Despite concerns he may lose interest in Chelsea after a few years of success, the Russian is adamant he sees Chelsea as a longterm-project. Abramovich's rare public-pledge will come as a huge relief to Chelsea fans in the week that Mourinho also underlined his commitment to the club by signing a new five-year contract.

Following the disappointment of the midweek European Cup exit against Liverpool, Stamford Bridge will be in party mood tomorrow as captain John Terry is presented with the Premiership trophy.

But Mourinho said today: "To win the championship after 50 years was a fantastic achievement. We must look forward now to win more silverware, not after another half a century but year after year. The priority is to keep the champions and make sure you don't lose the important players. This club has conditions for that.
