Roeder had to watch as the club, ordered by the banks to raise almost £30million to avoid bankruptcy, drastically pruned the playing staff, including high-profile players such as Joe Cole, Freddie Kanoute, Trevor Sinclair and Glen Johnson.
Injuries to key players such as Michael Carrick, Steve Lomas and Rufus Brevett made his task more difficult but Roeder was working hard to bring in new players to boost a wafer-thin squad.
However, a war of words with new signing David Connolly and Roeder's decision to get changed at the team hotel rather than use the changing rooms at Millmoor before Saturday's defeat will not have helped his position.
Roeder, who was spending time with his family today, was said to be bewildered by the timing of his sacking but is determined to return to football as soon as possible.
