Robert confirms Robson's progress

Sir Bobby Robson celebrated his 100th win as Newcastle manager as his side predictably finished off NAC Breda to reach the UEFA Cup second round.

Laurent Robert won it four minutes from time with a simple goal which was hard on the home side who tried to live up to their boisterous fans' optimism.

If Johan Elmander had done better than find goalkeeper Steve Harper's legs after just 21 seconds, it might have made for a more interesting evening for the visitors, who held a 5-0 advantage from the first leg.

From Harper's throw and an intelligent pass from Shola Ameobi, Newcastle managed an instant response but Viana's fierce shot was well saved by keeper Gabor Babos.

Few in the ground, including 1,500 travelling fans, would have complained if the opening minute had been matched by the following 89. But that was as good as it got.

The languid midfielder Orlando Engelaar did present problems for a Newcastle midfield which was overmanned as Robson handed Viana a forward role behind Ameobi.

Engelaar created the best chances, unleashing a free-kick which clipped Harper's gloves and crossbar and a weaker shot which was saved with some ease. NAC captain Rob Penders, redundant in his defensive duties, also saw a header hit the post.
