He said: "I think everyone knew I had set my heart on Tottenham. They showed interest in me for such a long time. It's such a big club and the way they like to play football is important. I was certainly not interested in going to a club that plays the long-ball game."
While there are few question marks over the stocky winger's creative talents, some observers express concern about his mobility.
But head coach Martin Jol insists the fears are groundless. He said: "I believe he is more of a wide player than a traditional winger and I think he is a bit special. We now have two options on the left: Reto Ziegler or Andy.
"We will have to see what his level of fitness is, but that is the same with every new player.
"He's not Ruud Gullit, he's not that type of athlete. But look at Shaun Wright-Phillips. He does not have not that kind of build, either, yet he's the best winger in England."
Reid's acclimatisation will be helped by the presence of Dawson. The 20-year-old is unavailable tomorrow due to a shin injury and faces strong competition from Ledley King, Noureddine Naybet, Anthony Gardner and Calum Davenport for a centre-back slot.
He said: "I understand it's not going to be easy. If you look at the players they have got, I know I'm going to have to work hard.
"But it's a new environment and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Sean Davis (back), Ziegler (hamstring), Gardner (nose) and Fredi Kanoute (suspended) are also missing.
