On Saturday, the Latvian mixed the sublime with the ridiculous in roughly equal measure, making fine saves from Don Hutchison, Alex Rae and Kevin Phillips while relying on his defenders on a couple of occasions after failing to gather the ball. To round off an eventful day, he was booked for time-wasting by referee Mike Riley and flattened captain Dean Austin when he punched clear another long ball. Austin, who spent six years with Tottenham in the 1990s, clearly did not bear a grudge as he said: 'He's a very good goalkeeper and made some good saves. 'His English is coming on and when he learns the language he'll be even better because he'll be able to direct his back four.' Palace manager Alan Smith also dwelt on Kolinko's inability to communicate with his team-mates but any goalkeeper who saves four penalties in as many months, as the 25-year-old has done, is bound to find favour with his boss. 'Things get lost in translation but he's a very good goalkeeper. Once he gets used to our ways he'll be fine,' said Smith.
