Rehman: Robben is scary

They have had little to cheer this season, apart from the emergence of Rehman, who is the only British Asian playing in the Premiership.

Birmingham-born Rehman has quickly adjusted to the demands of playing at the highest level, his disappointing first-half performance against Blackburn on Saturday the one blemish on an otherwise seamless transition from reserve-team football.

Having spent part of last season on loan at Brighton, Rehman was anxious to finally break through this season at the club he joined eight years ago. And he has made the most of the opportunity that came his way when Ian Pearce limped off at Villa Park last month.

"It's like a dream come true for me," said Rehman. "This is what I've been working for since I came here when I was 13. I'm just grateful that Chris Coleman gave me this opportunity and I have to do the best I can not to let myself or the team down.

"In the last month and a half I've learned more than in the whole time I was in the reserves because Cookie has played at the highest level in my position and it really helps. He knows the position inside out so it can only help myself, Zat Knight, Alain Goma and Ian Pearce."

Rehman first built up a rapport with Coleman when the Welshman was a player at Fulham. He would regularly confide in the central defender, seeking advice on how to improve all aspects of his game, and it is clear that he retains a great deal of respect for his former mentor.

"I used to watch him play so I know how good he was," said Rehman. "He has high standards so if he sees people not reaching that level he'll know."

Rehman also has strong principles. And his dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed by Coleman, or passers-by for that matter.

Last week he was spotted practising on his own in a park near his home after training. It is another example of the determination that characterises his desire to succeed.

"There's a lot of temptations from my mates but I've got to try and stay away from it all so I'll do whatever I can to avoid that," said Rehman. "It's hard to resist but if you know where you want to go it's worth it."
