Redwood's looking so solid

Redwood can return from a lengthy break refreshed and ready for action in the Princess of Wales's Stakes, the highlight of day one of Newmarket's July meeting tomorrow.

Barry Hills's five-year-old has raced only once so far this season but showed he is a quality performer when second to Rewilding in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in March.

He was a bit too eager early on that day but showed plenty of guts to run on in the final furlong and was beaten by just over three lengths by the subsequent Royal Ascot winner.

That was the latest in a succession of excellent efforts from Redwood at the highest level, with the entire having claimed second in the Hong Kong Vase on his final start last term. He also finished third in the Canadian International and won another Group One event at Woodbine last September.

Redwood obviously enjoys travelling but he can also perform well at home, a point he proved with a creditable second in this race last year. While he has not raced for 103 days, that is not a major negative as he has previously run well after a break and this dip in class will make him hard to beat.

On the same card, Census is sure to be well supported as he steps up to Group Three level in the Bahrain Trophy.
