Redknapp hails Jol revolution

Jamie Redknapp today hailed the Martin Jol revolution at White Hart Lane, claiming Tottenham finally have a backbone to match their ability.

The midfielder, who left Spurs for Southampton two month ago, played a key role in the 1-0 victory over his former club.

But, despite the setback to Tottenham's UEFA Cup ambitions, Redknapp believes there are still reasons to be cheerful in N17.

He said: "This is the best Spurs team I have seen in an awfully long time. They are always a threat and they have good players. Also they have a bit of backbone to them, which is a criticism which has been levelled at them in the past.

"It's now a good Spurs team and I sure it can only get better because the average age is so young.

"When Jermain Defoe picks up the ball, it's like it's tied to his foot. Mido looks a threat. There's Fredi Kanoute and I feel Robbie Keane is as good as any player in the country. I am a massive fan of his. When you have got players like that you have always got half a chance."

Spurs created plenty at St Mary's before and after Nigel Quashie's 51st-minute header, only to be repeatedly denied by Southampton goalkeeper and former Spurs trialist Paul Smith. Redknapp, however, believes their attacking endeavour is testament to the coaching skills of Martin Jol and understands why he is now being eyed by Ajax.
