Ramprakash off Down Under

Mark Ramprakash has decided to play cricket in Australia while Middlesex make up their minds whether to grant his request for a transfer to a new county.

The 31 year-old England batsman has asked to be released from his contract at Lord's in the belief that a change of county could rekindle the magic that made him one of the domestic circuit's best Test prospects a decade ago. His request to leave Middlesex after 13 seasons of first-team service was submitted in November, but he has still not heard whether the county are prepared to let him go.

A Middlesex spokesman said: "The situation has not changed."

So, Ramprakash has decided to take advantage of the deadlock by keeping match fit in Western Australia in preparation for the start of the new County Championship season. He leaves this week with his family to fulfil a short-term contract to play Saturday grade cricket in Perth for the University of Western Australia until mid-March. He will remain on stand-by for England's Sri Lanka tour during that time.

Ramprakash was not available to discuss the trip, but his wife Vandana confessed that her husband had become frustrated by the delay in settling his playing future so near the start of the new season. She confirmed that neither John Emburey, the new Middlesex coach and a playing colleague of Ramprakash's for many years, nor new county captain Angus Fraser had been in touch with her husband recently.

She said: "No one from Middlesex has spoken to Mark, not even Embers. We're off to Australia and Mark would obviously like to see this sorted out.

"We can't speak to any other counties until he is officially released from his Middlesex contract. Once released, he is open to offers."
