Radcliffe pledges to run in capital

Now in her sixth marathon, she is not ruling out the prospect of another record.

Unlike her 2003 tour de force, she will this time run in the women's only race without the help of male pacemakers. "I always love racing in London and get amazing support from the British people when I run there," said Radcliffe. "I don't see why this year should be different. In perfect conditions I can run as fast on my own as with others. First and foremost, though, it will be a very high-quality race and the main aim is to win."

Asked why she had chosen to run London rather than attempting to complete the 'Grand Slam' of big city marathon triumphs by adding the Boston crown to her previous victories in London, Chicago and New York, Radcliffe said: "Boston is a race I want to do at some point but London is very special to me. I don't pick races thinking about things like pressure; I pick the ones that in my heart I want to do.

"I love the atmosphere, crowds and course and I know it will always be a great quality race. It is also the 25th anniversary this year which adds to the occasion." It is possible Radcliffe may attempt the same double as in 2002 when she won the World Cross Country Championships 8km title and London within the space of a few weeks. "I haven't quite decided what events I will compete in prior to London but the World Cross Country (in St Etienne in March) is an event which is also very special to me and is a definite possibility," she said.

The London race will be Radcliffe's first step towards the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Asked about the speculation that she and husband Gary Lough might consider starting a family between now and the next Olympics, she said: "Nothing is planned. I don't think a family is something that you 'fit in'."
