Promotion must be the next target, says Burton

Deon Burton has targeted promotion as the perfect tonic for the disappointment of missing out on an FA Cup quarter-final with Manchester United.

Brentford were beaten 3-1 by Southampton in last night's fifth round replay, denying them a lucrative, high-profile encounter with the holders.

But Martin Allen's side still have a League One play-off spot to play for and, with games in hand on all their rivals, striker Burton is confident they can make the top six.

He said: "Before the game, we didn't even think about Manchester United.

"We knew we had to cross this bridge first and get a Premiership team. Unfortunately we lost, so now we just have to look to the league, win our games in hand and get promoted into the Championship."

After Peter Crouch equalised Eddie Hutchinson's opener, Brentford had a host of chances to regain the lead before half-time. Burton, Jay Tabb and Hutchinson - who hit the bar with a header - all went close, but failed to beat former Brentford goalkeeper Paul Smith.

Burton believes a second goal at that stage would have changed the outcome.

He said: "We are disappointed, we thought we could have definitely won. I think the first half we did really well and maybe we should have taken the other chances we had.

"I had two and Jay Tabb had another decent opportunity. The boys did their best and I don't think the score didn't really did us justice."
