When you know the inevitable is about to happen, there isn't a lot you can do except limit the damage or, in Everton's case, maximise the rewards. We all know that Wayne Rooney is going to leave, it's just a matter of when. In the meantime, David Moyes' team must try to overcome a West Brom side who have made a solid start.

Charlton had the perfect wake-up call on the opening day of the season when Bolton put four goals past them but since then they have done pretty well with wins over Portsmouth and Aston Villa. They will be hopeful of another victory against an anaemic-looking Manchester City side.

Middlesbrough v C Palace

Crystal Palace did their best against Chelsea on Tuesday but it was nowhere near good enough. No disgrace there but the problem for Palace this season will be when they go behind will they have enough to come back? The early portents, as we feared, are not that encouraging.

Now the record's out of the way, it will surely be business as usual for Arsenal. A battling point at Newcastle in midweek will have given Norwich new belief but Arsene Wenger's side are several gears higher than the Magpies.

A promising start for Tottenham almost came to grief during the week when West Brom took the lead but the north London side have invested wisely and Jermain Defoe popped up to squeeze home a deserved equaliser. At the other end, Paul Robinson has also hit a rich vein of form.

Bolton v Liverpool

After their flop European humbling Liverpool need a gentle rub-down themselves but are unlikely to get it from Bolton's old boys.

West London's favourite purveyor of cheesy tunes has already staged a coup at the Cottage by regaining his pre-match slot and manager Coleman must wish his players possessed the same tenacity. Portsmouth are yet to win this season, but the visit of Fulham represents their best chance yet.
