Van Bommel has also made his feelings clear. He said: "I know how good the Premier League is and it would be very nice to play there because the level of football is so high. Tottenham are a big club and a sleeping giant.
"I know there have been rumours about me going to Germany, but I want to play in the Premiership."
Pleat has admitted that he sees van Bommel as one of the key signings for next term, irrespective of who the new manager turns out to be. "He is one of the players we might be thinking about in the summer," he said.
Pleat and Levy still have a lot of work to do since the player's agent may still steer van Bommel towards Germany regardless of his public desire to play in the Premiership.
Jansen believes his client will elect to join Schalke 04 this summer despite their lack of enthusiasm to match PSV's asking price. Schalke 04 general manager Rudi Assauer is unwilling to meet PSV's demands but Jansen said: "I believe the transfer will go ahead."
Jansen could be playing his own game, of course, by trying to keep the spotlight off Spurs and Villa.
Indeed, Villa boss David O'Leary has long been an admirer of the 26-year-old and they look to hold one advantage in probably being able to offer the player European football, and possibly Champions League, next season.
There is much at stake for Spurs after a season when the lack of a combative midfielder has cost them dear. With Jamie Redknapp expected to leave at the end of the season along with Gus Poyet and Darren Anderton, the acquisition of van Bommel is a top priority.
Pleat has already been buoyed by his success in securing the long-term future of Simon Davies, who signed a two-year contract extension last week.
He said: "Simon is very much part of this club's future." Meanwhile, Dean Richards could be recalled to the squad for the trip to Villa after coming through another reserve game this week. Christian Ziege is also available along with Rohan Ricketts.
Ledley King is still struggling with a hip problem while full-back Stephen Carr misses out through suspension.
