Pleat says Postiga sale is not an option

David Pleat today hit back at suggestions that Tottenham would be prepared to sell striker Helder Postiga.

The Portuguese youngster has failed to score since his £6.25million move from FC Porto during the summer. His goal drought has led to rumours that Spurs would try and offload him during the January transfer window.

But Pleat made it clear today that new UEFA rules prevented this from happening, as a player must be with his new club for at least a year before a transfer can be considered.

Pleat held meetings with Postiga and his representatives at the club's Chigwell training ground yesterday. He said: "We have no intention of selling Helder and nor could we.

"He is a young player and he is anxious to do well and show the fans just what he can do. There is no question he has a future at Spurs and besides that, new UEFA rules make it clear that a player cannot leave a club within a year of signing for them.

"Therefore, suggestions that we will be selling him in January are wrong. We do not need the money and so there is no financial reason for us to consider selling him either."
