This week, Lewsey and Iain Balshaw had to pass fitness tests on injuries and Richard Hill has been eased back into the pre-match routine following five weeks out with a hamstring injury.
Woodward said: "You can beat yourself up and overreact after a performance like last weekend's when we looked a yard off the pace against Wales. Whatever the reason, we have just done light sessions this week.
"This match has been all about getting selection and the amount of training we are undertaking right and maybe we did too much before we played Wales."
Martin Johnson, the England captain, made this point during the week and by listening to the senior players Woodward has nipped a potentially damaging problem in the bud.
He said: "There is a tremendous atmosphere in the camp. I have no doubt that our supporters will see the real England on Sunday night."
More than 20,000 England fans are in Sydney for the semifinal and their numbers could swell by another 10,000 with expats trying to snap up the last of the top priced tickets which are selling for £190 each.
But there could be as many as 5,000 tickets still unsold at the 84,000-capacity Telstra Stadium - the former Olympic venue.
Meanwhile, Wallaby coach Eddie Jones has accused unknown parties of "espionage" before his side takes on New Zealand in Sydney tomorrow.
Jones said: "There is definitely espionage going on. We have had things going missing in hotels that was our property."
Jones revealed that earlier in the tournament there had been an incident where coaching notes had disappeared from the Australian team hotel.
