Phillips Idowu aiming to emulate Jessica Ennis

Phillips Idowu, Christine Ohuruogu and David Greene will tonight aim to add to Britain's medal tally at the World Championships.

Jessica Ennis took gold in the heptathlon on Sunday evening and will be watching in Berlin's Olympic Stadium as her team-mates attempt to secure more glory.

Olympic silver medallist Idowu produced the second biggest jump in qualifying for the triple jump final, 17.32metres, but Portugal's Nelson Evora was also in impressive form.

Evora, who pipped Idowu to Olympic gold by just five centimetres in Beijing and is also the defending world champion, jumped 17.44m in qualifying and will again be the man to beat.

Ohuruogu is the reigning Olympic and world champion but will not be favourite for the 400m after a season plagued by poor form and injury. The 25-year-old produced a battling performance in her semi-final to finish second behind great rival Sanya Richards, but the American has run under 50 seconds five times this season and Olympic silver medallist Shericka Williams of Jamaica will also be a major threat.

Greene is the least well known of the British trio but produced the best performance to reach the final of the 400m hurdles, clocking a personal best of 48.27s as he chased home 2005 world champion Bershawn Jackson.

"I've put myself in a good position and anything can happen," said the 23-year-old from Llanelli.

"I thought about a place in the final before coming here if everyone ran to their potential but I think I've caught them a bit off guard."

In yesterday's evening session, Jenny Meadows and Marilyn Okoro qualified for tomorrow's final of the 800m, but team-mate and British number one Jemma Simpson missed out. Meadows thought she had made a "pig's ear" of her semi-final before a storming finish saw her snatch second place on the line, while Okoro was also second in the third semifinal to advance.

"I made a pig's ear of it at the start and got myself boxed in but I was only a few metres off the pace and still felt strong," said Meadows. "I've worked so, so hard for this final and I thought it would never come.

"Two British women in the final is great, it's what this event has been promising for a while."

Kate Dennison missed out on a medal in the pole vault after finishing sixth, the British record holder clearing 4.55m with her second attempt but failing at 4.65m.

James Brewer agonisingly missed out on the final of the 1,500m on his major championship debut by just 0.08 sec. "I had nothing left at the line," he said.
