Pearson turns it on for Wimbledon

Former Surrey off-spinner Richard Pearson has his sights set on a return trip to The Oval on 9 September for the final of club cricket's most prestigious knockout tournament.

Pearson, who had three season on the Surrey staff in the mid-90s, is now vicecaptain of the Wimbledon team which has booked a place in the quarter-finals of the £12,000 Evening Standard Challenge Trophy, the 50-over Sunday tournament which features the London area's leading 112 teams.

The 29-year-old spinner, who also had two seasons with Essex, produced the remarkable figures of four wickets for four runs from

8.1 overs as Wimbledon romped to a six-wicket victory over former champions Brondesbury.

Challenge Trophy winners in 1997 and 99, Brondesbury were bowled out for 131 as the Surrey League champions recorded one of their rare victories over a Middlesex side.

Wileman's delight at removing one of the favourites was tempered with the news that Wimbledon must travel for the fourth time in four rounds on 5 August. They have been drawn away to Bexley, the 1996 runners-up.
