The crowd came to life, the firecrackers and flares began to fly around a bit but then up popped Johnny-on-the-spot Paul Scholes again and that drew the fire out of the home fans.
It's incredible how many times Scholesy has done it, both for club and country.
I've said for a couple of years that he is the jewel in our crown.
We've got some outstanding young players like Steven Gerrard in the squad now but the little man is worth his weight in gold the way he comes up with vital goals.
In that respect, he reminds me of Bryan Robson although I happen to think that Paul has got even more to his game than the former England skipper.
He doesn't say much but his performances for England and Manchester United speak volumes.
As it turned out, apart from the missile-throwers, it wasn't a particularly hostile atmosphere. I was surprised at the size of the crowd but it seems that international football in Greece is not regarded in the same way as the club scene.
The win sets it all up nicely for the match in Germany next September and we really do feel we can now go to Munich and turn the tables on them.
I didn't manage to get on last night but I wasn't too disappointed. The way the team played against Mexico I didn't expect many changes and they did exceptionally well again.
Obviously I look particularly closely at the defence and I must say I thought young Ashley Cole turned in another very mature performance and managed to get in a couple of particularly timely tackles.
Technically the Greeks were nice to watch sometimes and they often had good movement up front. Our defenders maintained their concentration well though and David Seaman enjoyed a relatively quiet evening.
People have asked me if the team spirit in this squad is the best I've known since I first played for England in 1996. That's a difficult question to answer.
I have to say the spirit has invariably been good throughout that time but what this squad has which others have perhaps lacked in such large measure is youthful exuberance.
