Paul heads league of temptations

Henry Paul is one of three high-profile international players on Twickenham's rugby league hit-list.

Far from limiting their league signings to Jason Robinson, the RFU has identified Paul, Kris Radlinski of Wigan and Iestyn Harris of Leeds as further potential signings.

Fran Cotton, chairman of Club England, the RFU sub-committee responsible for national team affairs, said: 'Radlinski, Harris and Paul are all quality players and they are all saying they want to play rugby union. We are not so much chasing them. They are chasing us because of the obvious attractions of our international game.

'There is nothing wrong with targeting top rugby league players, providing they enhance our sport. Henry Paul is already a world-class player in rugby league and he would be a success in union.

'As a matter of course, the England management is looking at various players with a view to strengthening the squad.' The RFU has already made enquiries about Paul, a 25-year-old New Zealander who qualifies for England via a grandfather from Liverpool.

In his case, England will have to be patient. Paul's contract with the Bradford Bulls has another year to run and Twickenham is unlikely to pay a transfer fee in order to hasten his arrival. 'We have had discussions with the RFU,' said David McKnight, the player's agent.
