Paul Casey set to be fit for Ryder Cup 2018 despite back injury

Paul Casey is expected to take his place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team despite withdrawing from the BMW Championship due to a back problem.

Casey was named as one of Thomas Bjorn’s four wildcard picks for the biennial tournament in Paris, which starts on September 28, and gave the Europe captain a scare when he did not complete the tournament in Philadephia.

Yet Standard Sport understands that Casey pulled out of the event merely as a precaution, and that he expects to be fully fit for Europe as they try to regain the Cup at Le Golf National.

The Englishman was named alongside Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia to complete the 12-man team.

Casey has suffered back problems already this season. He pulled out of the Players’ Championship in May but was able to resume playing within a fortnight. It is not clear whether this latest discomfort is a recurrence of the same problem.

Meanwhile, Tony Finau has been named as the USA’s final wildcard for the competition, alongside Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau. “He has an unbelievable body of work this year,” Jim Furyk, the US captain, said. “He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to go for him.”
